On Saturday, June 18, 2022, the Empowerment Congress hosted a multi-generational, cross-cultural dialogue under the heading of “Building Black Excellence through Real Emancipation.” Anchored by stirring remarks from featured speaker, Tavis Smiley, the conversation reinforced the need for intentional and purposeful language that upholds the concepts of “True Emancipation” and “Black Excellence.” Participants considered several questions, including:
  • What do you consider to be “True Emancipation” and “Black Excellence” and how are they achieved?
  • What must happen in American society to promote “True Emancipation” and “Black Excellence?”
  • What actions can you take to achieve “True Emancipation” and “Black Excellence?”
One of the primary recurring themes was the importance of ongoing commitment to pursuing true emancipation in our own communities and by our own actions – especially where laws fall short. The dialogue is ongoing and we invite you to share your thoughts on the questions above to continue to stimulate conversations.
The event was capped with an energetic celebration with music, fellowship, and a traditional Juneteenth lunch.
