The Emerging Civic Leaders (ECL) Committee hosted a two-part civic engagement series: The Civic Engagement Event on Thursday, September 29, 2016, and The Ballot Initiative Event on Thursday, October 13, 2016.
The Ballot Initiative Event was a workshop and discussion designed to address issues and concerns relating to key measures on the November 2016 ballot. The event’s objective was to educate our target audience on the implications of specific propositions. Prior to the event, committee leadership surveyed its members to pinpoint which measures were of the greatest concern and interest. The results of the survey overwhelmingly identified proposition 51, proposition 55, proposition 57, and proposition 64.
Information was presented on the various measures, followed by an open forum for questions and answers. Each measure was explored and insight was provided on exactly how the measures, if passed, could affect each citizen, their families, and the community as a whole. ECL Committee members Terry Cole, Talitha James, and Destiny Drake presented information on Propositions 51, 55, and 57, respectively. After the presentation was completed a mock voting poll was taken to gauge how the attendees would vote on the aforementioned propositions, given their increased knowledge.
The Empowerment Congress thanks the Drug Policy Alliance for hosting and sponsoring this event.
The Emerging Civic Leaders Committee meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6pm. Click here to RSVP for the next scheduled meeting.
