The purpose of this workshop is to define civic engagement in a way that promotes mass democratic participation in public policy formulation, decision-making and execution. Participants will use case studies that exemplify how mass education, advocacy and mobilization impacted the outcome of a policy decision and in the process empowered participants and held elected officials accountable to the desirable outcome. Case studies will examine the importance of coalition building, the deployment of technology and the significance of a broad public presence at key junctures in the policy formulation process.
