SUMMARY:Joy-Ann Reid: “Medgar & Myrlie” Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Pomona College for an evening with Joy-Ann Reid as she discusses her forthcoming book\, Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the Love Story That Awakened America\, with film and media scholar Kevin Wynter\, Assistant Professor of Media Studies at Pomona College. \nReid is the host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut. Her books include Fracture: Barack Obama\, the Clintons and the Racial Divide and the New York Times bestseller The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story. Reid previously hosted the weekend MSNBC show AM Joy. The former managing editor of The Grio\, Reid has had columns appearing in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The Miami Herald\, New York\, and The Daily Beast. She lives in Maryland and Brooklyn. \nIn Medgar & Myrlie\, Reid traces the extraordinary lives and legacy of civil rights icons Medgar and Myrlie Evers\, situating Medgar Evers’s assassination as a catalyzing moment in American history. \nMyrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight\, married just one year later\, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. \nMedgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP\, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant\, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation\, lynching\, violence\, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.” They fought to desegregate the intractable University of Mississippi\, organized picket lines and boycotts\, despite repeated terroristic threats\, including the 1962 firebombing of their home\, where they lived with their three young children. \nOn June 12\, 1963\, Medgar Evers became the highest profile victim of Klan-related assassination of a black civil rights leader at that time; gunned down in the couple’s driveway in Jackson. In the wake of his tragic death\, Myrlie carried on their civil rights legacy; writing a book about Medgar’s fight\, trying to win a congressional seat\, and becoming a leader of the NAACP in her own right. \nIn this groundbreaking and thrilling account of two heroes of the civil rights movement\, Joy-Ann Reid uses Medgar and Myrlie’s relationship as a lens through which to explore the on-the-ground work that went into winning basic rights for Black Americans\, and the repercussions that still resonate today.

SUMMARY:Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) is a joint powers authority of the city and county of Los Angeles\, created in 1993 to address the problems of homelessness in Los Angeles. LAHSA is the lead agency in the HUD-funded Los Angeles Continuum of Care\, and coordinates and manages programs providing shelter\, housing\, and services to people experiencing homelessness. Since 2005\, LAHSA has coordinated the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count to help the thousands of men\, women\, and families that are sleeping without a permanent home across Los Angeles County every night. \nThe data collected is an essential component in understanding the scope and nature of homelessness in Los Angeles County and helps LAHSA and its partners deliver services where they are needed most. \nHomelessness is a humanitarian crisis that takes the support of our entire community to end. \nJoin us as we participate in the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count on Thursday\, January 25\, at 8pm\, convening at Fire Station 54. \nNot able to join us? Register for a different date and/or site on the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count website.

SUMMARY:Community Empowerment Training Session
DESCRIPTION:The Community Empowerment Training Session is a transformative training through which participants can strengthen their capacity to lead through story telling. Facilitated by Sarah ElRaheb from Harvard University\, this has proven to be an invaluable tool for public leaders\, community organizers\, students\, and leaders across a range of organizations and communities.\n \nWHY “STORIES”?  \nStories enable us to communicate our values as lived experiences  rather than abstract principles. They have the power to move  people and inspire change by evoking shared values that motivate  others to action. You may think that your personal story does not matter or that people are not interested. However\, those engaged in public work or leading organizations have the responsibility to offer an account of who they are\, why they do what they do\, and where they hope to lead. If one does not author their own story\, others likely will\, and it may not be as one wishes.  \nDuring this introductory program\, participants will gain skills that include: \n\nHow to craft one’s public narrative  \nHow to connect one’s story to that of their community to motivate commitment to a shared purpose and call to action\nHow to analyze the role of narrative in moments of critical  change and use tools to enable others’ agency  \nHow to increase one’s capacity to lead others using the public narrative framework \n\nPlease complete the form below to register. \nLoading…
