Woke Vote: Why Your Vote Matters

On Monday, October 22, 2018, the Emerging Civic Leaders Committee, in partnership with the African American Voter Registration, Education, and Participation Project (AAVREP), Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals, and California Policy & Research Initiative, convened an engaging panel who spoke on the importance of midterm’s elections and voter turnout among millennials. Panelists included:

  • Hillel Aaron, Echo Park bureau chief, L.A. Weekly (moderator)
  • Sara Hernandez, attorney, DLA Piper
  • Hon. Sebastian Ridley-Thomas (ret.), director, California Policy & Research Initiative; chief strategist, African American Voter Registration, Education, and Participation Project
  • Alice Walton, public affairs specialist, Ek, Sunkin & Bai
  • Hon. Thomas Wong, member, San Gabriel Water District

Panelists provided insight to attendees on the propositions appearing on the November 6 ballot and the potential impacts of election results. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder also registered voters on-site and The League of Women Voters hosted a table to educate voters on ballot initiatives. The event closed with a silent listening party on the patio of the Exposition Park Constituent Service & Training Center.
